5 out of 5

Author: Maxine Hong Kingston
Maxine is the first generation American-born Chinese in her family, she is also the eldest child. Growing up with very traditional parents but with modern American environment was tough for her and forced her to live a double life. She describes her childhood with her imagination being a warrior woman, fighting against the evil of the world, yet she must come back and serve her husband and family in the end.
It is a bitter but at the same time a very appealing story about a girl who was always being dejected by her family who then grew up to become a fearless warrior to fight traditions and face the world.
